University of Greenwich

Improving student application forecasting and reporting

The Challenge...
The University of Greenwich is a major UK university with a wide portfolio of programmes, 2,000 staff, and 26,000 students in eleven national and international Partner Colleges.
To support a strategic move to a university-wide enterprise reporting environment, CACI implemented a new management information platform to streamline reporting across different areas. The first phase of the project covered student records and applications, and needed to be flexible to accommodate changing regulatory demands from the Higher Education Funding Council for England. An Oracle Data Warehouse, SAP BusinessObjects Data Integrator, Xcelsius and WebIntelligence were implemented.
The solution...
CACI used an Agile approach to the data warehouse development, with distinct stages, daily communication, and the ability to flex requirements without a costly impact on the project.
“With the Agile methodology we were informed throughout, with any problems identified and solved quickly. We appreciated CACI’s expertise in this light touch approach to project planning and management.”
Christine Couper, Head of Planning and Statistics

Results and benefits...
Reporting efficiency and scope has now improved and Greenwich makes greater use of business intelligence. Nightly snapshots taken from the data warehouse mean complex analyses can be run, helping Greenwich to predict revenue based on student registrations, comparisons with historical data, and known conversion rates of applications to registrations. Complex management reporting now has the capacity to be highly visual, giving clear insight into each school, department and programme. Improved reporting on student demographics means staff have a clear understanding of the populations they are teaching.
- CACI knowledge, credibility and expertise in higher education
- Improved data visualisation and reduced dependence on spread sheets
- Agile methodology deployed to design and build a data warehouse
- A legacy of good practice to support future development
"CACI left a legacy of good practice for development in subsequent phases including monitoring attendance linked to student information through cross-system reporting, and working with faculties to implement KPI dashboards."

Head of Planning & Statistics
